Am 29. Juli 2020 wurde stattdessen erstmals Wacken World Wide mit Konzerthighlights u. a. von Doro, Body Count feat. Ice-T, Anthrax und Rage sowie Specials wie die Guitar-Clinic mit Diamond Head`s Brian Tatler und Soen’s Cody Ford. veranstaltet.[36]

2021

Das 31. Festival war vom 29. bis 31. Juli 2021 geplant. Aufgrund der COVID-19-Pandemie ist das Festival 2020 ausgefallen. 2021 sollte zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Festivals das Infield bereits am Mittwoch öffnen. Geplant waren am Mittwoch Auftritte u. a. von Lindemann, Clawfinger und Varang Nord.[37] Am 27. Juli 2020 waren die Karten für Wacken Open Air 2021 bereits ausverkauft.[38] Doch auch das Festival 2021 wurde pandemiebedingt auf das nächste Jahr verschoben, wie der Veranstalter am 1. Juni 2021 mitgeteilt hat.[39] Zwischendurch sollte vom 16. bis 18. September 2021 erstmals das Bullhead City 2021 Festival stattfinden,[40] doch auch dieses wurde pandemiebedingt abgesagt.[41]

Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Festivals wurde aufgrund des Wetters die Anreise gestoppt und abgebrochen.[43] Am Mittwoch musste der Festivalstart etwas verschoben werden.
