Republic Records ist ein US-amerikanisches Musiklabel. Das 1995 gegründete Label mit Sitz in New York City gehört zur Universal Music Group (UMG). Das Label wurde mehrfach von dem US-amerikanischen Musikmagazin Billboard als Label des Jahres (Label of the Year) ausgezeichnet.[1]

Geschichte

Die Brüder Avery Lipman und Monte Lipman gründeten Republic Records als Tochterunternehmen von MCA’s Geffen Records im Jahr 1995.[2] Beide waren zuvor bereits bei Musiklabels beschäftigt und Monte Lipman war gerade ohne Job. Die erste Veröffentlichung war von der Band Bloodhound Gang. Als Republic Records noch ein Independent-Label war, waren drei Leute bei Republic Records beschäftigt. Als ein Angebot des Major-Labels Universal Music Group zur Übernahme kam, nahm Republic Records im Jahr 2000 an.[3]

Im Jahr 2006 gründete die Universal Music Group die Universal Republic Records als Nachfolger von Republic Records. 2011 wurde Universal Republic Records eigenständig, nachdem die Universal Motown Republic Group im Sommer 2011 geschlossen wurde.[4] Mitte 2012 wurde aus Universal Republic Records wieder Republic Records.

Am 13. November 2014 veröffentlichte die kanadischen Rockband Nickelback mit No Fixed Address ihr erstes Album über Republic Records. Ende 2018 war Republic Records zum dritten Mal in vier Jahren auf Platz 1 der Billdboard-Jahresendecharts platziert.[5]
