Glendon Swarthout war zu dünn, um sich für die Officer Candidate School zu qualifizieren. So arbeiteten Glendon und Kathryn bei [[Willow Run]], einer Fabrik für B-24-Bomber in Michigan. Lewis (1907-2000) verfilmte die Geschichte in seinem Film "Die siebte Kavallerie" (1956) mit Randolph Scott (1898-1987) in einer Hauptrolle. 1958 veröffentlichte Swarthout seinen Kriegsroman "They Came to Cordura" über die Strafexpedition der Vereinigten Staaten gegen Pancho Villa (1878-1923) und seine Männer, die zuvor das Militärcamp der 13. US-Kavallerie in der Kleinstadt Columbus in New Mexico überfielen.
