Emily Smith (* 25. März 1981 in Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway) ist eine schottische Folk-Sängerin, Songwriterin und Musikerin aus Dumfriesshire.

Leben

Emily Smith wurde am 25. März 1981 in Dumfries in der Unitary Authority (Council Area) Dumfries and Galloway in Schottland im Vereinigten Königreich geboren. In Dumfries wuchs sie auch auf. Während ihrer Kindheit tanzte sie oft in der Tanzschule ihrer Mutter.[1] Ihre Liebe zur Musik entwickelte sich, als sie sich mit den Instrumenten Klavier, Kleine Trommel und Akkordeon beschäftigte. Im Schulchor entdeckte sie ihre Gesangsfähigkeiten. Daraufhin zog sie nach Glasgow, wo sie ihren Abschluss mit Auszeichnung (Honours Degree) in schottischer Musik an der Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (später Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) machte.[2]

Drei Jahre[1] nach ihrem Umzug nach Glasgow wurde sie 2002 mit der Aufzeichnung Young Traditional Music of the Year von BBC Radio Scotland geehrt. Im selben Jahr veröffentlichte sie ihr Debütalbum "A Day Like Today". Es folgten die Alben "A Different Life" (2005) und "Too Long Away" (2008). Mit ihrem Mann Jamie McClennan veröffentlichte sie 2009 das Album "Adoon Winding Nith". Jamie McClennan ist ein neuseeländischer Musiker und Musikproduzent. Er spielt die Leadgitarre in Emilys Begleitband.[1] Das Album wurde zur Feier des 250. Geburtstags des schottischen Dichters Robert Burns (1759–1796) veröffentlicht. Sie trat in der Musikfernsehsendung "Songs of Praise" der BBC auf und spielte 2009 spielte beim Liveevent Hogmanay Live von BBC Scotland mit. Im Jahr 2011 veröffentlichte sie ihr nächstes Album "Traveller's Joy".[2] Im Jahr 2013 folgte die Kompilation "Ten Years" zum zehnjährigen Jubiläum als Vollzeit-Folk-Musikerin. Auf der Kompilation sind neu arrangierte Songs wie "A Day like Today", bisher unveröffentlichte Songs und zwei Bonus-Live-Tracks enthalten.[3]

Am 24. Februar 2014 folgte ihr Album "Echoes". Es wurde ebenfalls über ihr eigenes Label White Fall Records veröffentlicht. In der Begleitband spielten ihr Mann Jamie McClennan (Gitarre), Matheu Watson (Gitarre), Signy Jakobsdottir (Perkussion) und Ross Hamilton (Bass). Als Gäste waren unter anderem Jerry Douglas, Kris Drever, Tim Edey (Lúnasa), Aoife O’Donovan (Crooked Still, Sometymes Why), Natalie Haas und Rory Butler (Southern Tenant Folk Union) dabei.[4] Vom 26. Mai bis 14. Juni 2015 war Emily Smith auf Tour, unter anderem durch Deutschland, Wales und England.[5] Am 2. Dezember 2016 folgten das Kollaborationsalbum "MacMath: The Silent Page" von Aaron Jones, Ali Burns, Claire Mann, Emily Smith, Jamie McClennan, Robyn Stapleton und Wendy Stewart sowie das Soloalbum "Songs for Christmas". 2018 und 2019 veröffentlichte sie im Duo Smith & McClennan jeweils ein weiteres Album.
